Author Guidelines

The Journal of Clinical Pharmacotherapy and Medicines Use (JCPMU) publishes clinically relevant scholarship focused on clinical pharmacotherapy, medication safety, medicines use and drug utilization, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, therapeutic outcomes, prescribing quality, real-world evidence, medicines optimization, and medication-related clinical decision-making.

Research from medicine, clinical pharmacy, clinical pharmacology, nursing, dentistry, public health, and related disciplines may be considered where medicines, pharmacotherapy, medication safety, or therapeutic decision-making are central to the work.

Article-specific word limits, abstract formats, and figure/table limits will be published before submissions are opened.

General manuscript requirements

Manuscripts must:

  • be written in clear academic English;
  • fall within the journal's Aims and Scope;
  • represent original scholarly work;
  • not be under simultaneous consideration by another journal;
  • report methods and results transparently;
  • identify authors and contributors accurately;
  • disclose relevant funding and competing interests;
  • provide applicable ethics, consent, and registration information;
  • follow an appropriate reporting guideline;
  • provide complete and accurate references;
  • include a Data Availability Statement where applicable; and
  • disclose relevant use of generative AI or large language models.

Reporting guidelines

Authors should use the reporting guideline appropriate to their study design. Relevant frameworks include CONSORT for randomized trials, STROBE for observational studies, PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses, SPIRIT for clinical-trial protocols, CARE for case reports, COREQ or SRQR for qualitative research, SQUIRE for quality-improvement studies, and other applicable EQUATOR Network guidance.

Authorship

JCPMU applies the ICMJE authorship criteria as its working authorship standard. All listed authors must make an appropriate scholarly contribution, approve the final manuscript, and accept accountability for the work. Individuals who contribute but do not meet authorship criteria should be acknowledged rather than listed as authors.

Artificial intelligence systems and large language models cannot be listed as authors.

Research ethics

Research involving humans, identifiable human data, animals, or other ethically regulated research must comply with applicable ethical and legal requirements. Authors must provide ethics-approval and informed-consent information where applicable.

Clinical trials

Clinical trials should be registered prospectively in an appropriate publicly accessible trial registry in accordance with applicable standards. Registry name and registration number must be reported in the manuscript.

Case reports

Case reports and case series must provide substantive educational value related to medicines, pharmacotherapy, therapeutic decision-making, or medication safety. Rarity of a diagnosis alone is insufficient. Case reports should follow applicable CARE guidance and must include appropriate patient consent for publication where required.

References

References must be accurate, complete, and verified against original sources. JCPMU intends to use a numbered biomedical/Vancouver-style reference system.

Open access and copyright

JCPMU is a fully open-access journal. Authors retain copyright. Published articles are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

Complete article-specific formatting and submission requirements will be finalized before manuscript submissions are opened.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The manuscript falls within the Aims and Scope of JCPMU.
  • The manuscript represents original work and is not currently under consideration by another journal.
  • All listed authors meet the journal's authorship requirements and have approved the manuscript and its submission.
  • All contributors who do not meet authorship criteria have been acknowledged appropriately.
  • The manuscript has been written in clear academic English.
  • The appropriate reporting guideline has been followed where applicable.
  • Ethics approval and informed-consent information have been provided where applicable.
  • Clinical-trial or study-registration information has been provided where applicable.
  • Funding sources have been disclosed.
  • Competing interests have been disclosed, or a statement confirming that none exist has been provided.
  • A Data Availability Statement has been provided where applicable.
  • Relevant use of generative AI or large language models has been disclosed.
  • References have been checked against the original sources for accuracy and completeness.
  • Tables and figures are numbered, labelled, and cited appropriately in the manuscript.
  • Appropriate permission has been obtained for third-party copyrighted material.
  • Identifiable patient or participant information has not been included without appropriate authorization and consent.
  • Any related manuscripts, preprints, conference abstracts, or substantially overlapping publications have been disclosed to the journal.

Original Research

Original Research articles report methodologically sound quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research within the journal's scope.
Eligible research may include clinical, observational, pharmacoepidemiological, drug-utilization, medication-safety, comparative-effectiveness, real-world evidence, implementation, and related studies in which medicines, pharmacotherapy, medication safety, or therapeutic decision-making are central.
Manuscripts must comply with applicable research-ethics, reporting, registration, authorship, data, and transparency requirements.

Review Articles

Review Articles provide rigorous and clinically relevant synthesis of evidence within the journal's scope.
This section may include systematic reviews, meta-analyses, scoping reviews, and selected narrative reviews.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses should follow applicable PRISMA guidance. Protocol registration should be reported where applicable.
Narrative reviews must provide critical and analytical synthesis rather than a purely descriptive overview.

Brief Reports

Brief Reports present concise, methodologically sound original findings with a focused contribution to clinical pharmacotherapy, medication safety, medicines use, therapeutic outcomes, or related areas within the journal's scope.
Brief Reports should not be used to divide a single study artificially into multiple publications. The work must provide a complete and interpretable scholarly contribution.

Case Reports

Case Reports must provide a clear and substantive educational contribution involving medicines, pharmacotherapy, therapeutic decision-making, or medication safety.
Suitable reports may include important adverse drug reactions, clinically significant drug interactions, unusual therapeutic responses, therapeutic failure, dose-selection or dose-optimization challenges, complex polypharmacy, pharmacogenomic considerations, medication-related management challenges, and clinically important medication-safety lessons.
Rarity of a diagnosis alone is not sufficient for publication.
Case Reports should follow applicable CARE reporting guidance and must comply with patient-confidentiality and consent-for-publication requirements.

Case Series

Case Series report multiple related cases that together provide a clinically meaningful and educational contribution concerning pharmacotherapy, medication safety, therapeutic outcomes, medicines use, or therapeutic decision-making.
The manuscript should explain why the cases are considered together and what broader clinical or scholarly lesson is supported by the series.
Applicable ethics, patient-consent, confidentiality, and reporting requirements must be satisfied.

Study Protocols

Study Protocols describe planned research addressing an important question within the journal's scope.
Protocols should provide sufficient methodological detail to permit scholarly assessment and should report applicable ethics approval, trial or protocol registration, funding, statistical-analysis planning, and reporting-guideline information.
Clinical-trial protocols should follow applicable SPIRIT guidance. Systematic-review protocols should follow appropriate protocol-reporting guidance.

Submission of a manuscript to JCPMU does not transfer copyright to the journal or Publisher.

If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors agree to grant European Science Research Press a non-exclusive licence to publish the article, identify itself as the original publisher, distribute the Version of Record, and support appropriate preservation, indexing, and dissemination.

Articles published in JCPMU are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

Authors are responsible for ensuring that they have the authority to submit and license their work and for obtaining any permissions required for third-party material.

The journal may require a separate author publishing/licensing agreement before final publication.
